Canton was originally a industrial neighborhood, a blue collar area. This neighborhood was first developed by The Canton Company beginning in 1828. Many of the homes in Canton are turn-of-the-century two- and three-story row houses. There are homes close to the water that date from the Civil War. New townhouses have been built at Canton Square and the Anchorage, as well as on empty lots throughout the neighborhood. There are also waterfront apartments and condominiums and lofts in rehabilitated industrial buildings. Even though redevelopment has in Canton, the historic flavor of the area has been maintained. This along with the opportunity to live close to where one works adds to the popularity of the area.

Canton is located along Baltimore's outer harbor in the southeastern part of the city. The neighborhoods that Canton is near are Patterson Park, Fells Point, Highlandtown, and Greektown. Canton is centered around O'Donnell Square, a park bordered on the north and south by O'Donnell Street, to the east by South Potomac Street, and to the west by Linwood Avenue. O'Donnell Square is home to restaurants, bars, a coffee shop and an art gallery, along with a number of diverse businesses and residences.

In recent years new developments have added other focus areas to the neighborhood, including the Canton Waterfront Park and Maryland Korean War Memorial, the rehabilitated American Can Company building, two marinas and a public boat launch, the DuBurns Soccer Arena.

The social structure of Canton has changed little in the last hundred years The immigrants who have always resided in this neighborhood have naturalized,  with  many  maintaining their culture. This is witness by the numerous ethic churches in the area. The population is still overwhelmingly blue collar, with the new Canton industries providing the employment which created Canton over one
hundred years ago.
